Resist Technique with 3D Texture Fades and Distress Oxides

Tim Holtz 3D Texture Fades with Distress Oxide Resist
Happy Friday! It is the first Friday of the month - and time for a new challenge at A Vintage Journey. Amanda is our host and the theme is How can you resist. Here is the description:
There are any different products in mixed media that you can use to do a resist technique - gesso, distress glaze, wax, embossing powder, etc. We would like you to use at least one resist technique on your vintage, shabby, mixed media, art journaling, industrial, timeworn or steampunk project.

I recently treated myself to one of the (relatively) new 3D Texture Fades from Tim Holtz so decided to use this for my resist technique.

I started with a Distress Oxide background in blues and greens. I then added versamark to the embossing folder and ran it through the big shot so the versamark transfers to the card in the 'flat' areas rather than the embossed areas. I heat dried with clear embossing powder.

This allowed me to add as much Distress Oxide as I liked to the embossed area along with some spritzing and the colour easily wipes away from the background blue/green.

I also used a wax resist on my Distress Paint background layer - but I think I have managed to hide most of this!!!

Have a great weekend!

Inspirational quotes canvas for A Vintage Journey

Canvas with Dina Wakley paints and Tim Holtz stamp sets - Perspective and Theories
Hi all. Today I am hosting the new challenge at A Vintage Journey. The theme this month is Get Sentimental. Time to use those words - be they poems, quotes or other sentiments.

My project is a 10x8 inch box canvas which I added texture to with paper/card scraps and texture paste before adding lots of wonderful colour with Dina Wakely paints. I am not going to go into lots of details on the process as I am back at AVJ in 2 weeks with a tutorial where I will be detailing the same process but on a much smaller scale!

All my background words are from Tim Holtz Theories stamp set - stamped onto tissue paper before adding to the canvas.

Tim Holtz Butterfly Duo is always a go to item for me! Painted with the same paints and used an oil pastel over the embossed areas for contrast.

Another favourite for my main Sentiment! Tim Holtz Perspective stamp set - embossed with ink and white powder over a painty background scrap.

If you haven't already come from there - do head over to A Vintage Journey for lots more inspiration!

Journals with friends

Eileen Hull Journal by Nikki Acton
Today I am sharing one of 2 journals I made a couple of weekends ago. Cathryn (for those that know her!) and I had a play day and got very busy with these journals. A bit like when Brenda and I did our Skype journals - the finished 4 projects were very different!

I crackled my main cover and then painted 2 panels for the front and back with various painty techniques. The journal is covered with Tims Holtz tattered florals and word chips. There are lots of pages inside ready for someone to fill!

I would like to play along at:

Have a great week.

We also have a new challenge today on the Craft Stamper blog - Take it Make it challenge. As always it is anything goes with stamping.

I chose to make some much needed cards for forthcoming birthdays using Tim Holtz's Theories stamp set. My backgrounds are all Distress Oxides.

Industrial patchwork framed heart for A Vintage Journey

Industrial patchwork framed heart by Nikki Acton
Hi everyone. It is time for our June challenge at A Vintage Journey; this month our host is Astrid and we have a favourite theme: Stencil It.
I recently took another Andy Skinner class and we were using his various paint techniques to alter an MDF box - you can see my post here if you missed it.
I also used this style on an altered coffee tin last year:
As you can probably tell - I do like this style and although it is quite time consuming it is effective!!
So for our Stencil It challenge I challenged myself to use a stencil on each of my patchwork elements within the frame.

The base board (blue) is a combination of PaperArtsy grunge paste and Deco Art crackle paint - although I may have painted over most of the crackles!

My heart is MDF and is altered with a texture medium and then painted with red and brown colours.
The frame and cogs have been given the rust effect treatment with Deco Art paints - Quinacridone Gold, Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide and Paynes Grey.

Thanks for stopping by. Do head on over to A Vintage Journey for more stencilling inspiration!
